STOLEN GIRLFRIENDS CLUB

The rules of Stolen Girlfriends Club: a youthful rebellious spirit, a healthy sense of humour, and the ability to entertain and make things matter.
The founders of the boutique brand, Dan Gosling, Luke Harwood and Marc Moore, are a New Zealand based trio with backgrounds in surfing. Their approach to the fashion business is as relative outsiders: they have no professional design training and began simply by making clothes for themselves and their friends.

Originally established as an art project in 2005, Stolen Girlfriends Club was intended as an umbrella name for creative projects to come under. Installations, exhibitions, parties, films and collaborations were soon followed by a foray into the world of fashion. Printed T-shirts formed the backbone of the label in its early stages, with one printed tee quickly becoming a cult item around town. The ‘Stolen Girlfriends Club Says Relax’ T-shirt – their take on the iconic 80s print – helped sum up the label’s ironic attitude and aesthetic early on.

They have quickly progressed from slogan tees, and today the brand consists of three categories – T-shirting and denim, jewellery and the more directional seasonal fashion collections for men and women. Whether inspired by punk romanticism, peace and love, or nomads and gypsies, each Stolen Girlfriends Club collection has an underlying feeling of rock ‘n roll delinquency. The designer’s casual surf backgrounds are also reflected in the wearable, sportswear feel to the clothes.

They continue to work on a variety of creative collaborations and projects, which has helped cement Stolen Girlfriends Club as one of New Zealand fashion’s most intriguing brands. In 2008, they paid tribute to the late legendary photographer Helmut Newton with ‘No Safety Helmut’, a project blessed and supported by June Newton and the Helmut Newton Foundation Berlin. Ten leading Australasian photographers re-interpreted their favourite Newton photograph, which were then exhibited in Sydney, Auckland and Tokyo.

A growing customerbase of influential fashion leaders, including Juliette Lewis, Kate Bosworth, Harley Viera Newton, Lykke Li, Beyonce Knowles, Fashion Toast’s Rumi Neely and Liberty’s Yasmin Sewell, has seen the brand’s international presence grow quickly. This international growth was acknowledged recently by Air New Zealand, who named Stolen Girlfriends Club as the winners of the Air New Zealand Fashion Innovation Awards 2009.
